“Trendy” Design: Creating a Timeless Space
2024 has so far presented us with several different design trends, from Mid-Century Modern to Boho Chic to Moody Decor and beyond. If, however, you design a space with only these trends in mind and simply recreate what you might see on social media, are you really creating a space that will last for the long-term or will it need to be replaced in a few months? This blog will dive into the importance of developing your own unique style in a sea of changing design trends.
There is nothing wrong with loving designs or decor with trending themes. Who doesn’t love the wood grains from Mid-Century Modern or the statement colors from the Moody Decor movement? The problem with “trendy” design is not in the designs themselves. It lies with the lack of varying design and uniqueness in the designs. Let’s break this down.
Let’s say that you are ordering from a popular retailer online that sells modern wares. You may be searching for a simple Mid-Century Modern loveseat or sofa. You pick your favorite fabric and hit “Add to Cart”. You then notice a club chair that would fit nicely in your space with the same wood base and fabric. You hit “Add to Cart”. Then you see a coffee table and end table in the exact same finish as the wood base for the chair and sofa so, you add those too! I think you get the picture, the list could go on endlessly with console tables, side boards, drink tables, display cabinets, lamps, and decor. While a couple furniture pieces should match in finishes or fabrics, the problem with committing to one look entirely is a lack of variation and ultimately, personality. And how disappointing will it be when the style you just committed to suddenly is “discontinued” or left behind? Think of the time, money, and energy that will be wasted when you ultimately will have to replace or change out the items you just purchased.
So, what should you do? Aim to create a space that is timeless, unique, and catered to you. This may mean holding off on designing your space until you have pinpointed the exact styles you love and what you specifically like about them. Get critical with the pictures you see online and decipher what you specifically like and dislike about the space. If you find yourself in need of external help, seek out an interior designer to help you pinpoint a unique theme for your space.
Another suggestion is to not buy everything from one retailer. Try to select different places to purchase from to add dimension and layers to your space. This could mean that the space comes together over time. Maybe you purchase your sofa and a club chair from the same retailer but, you purchase the coffee table from another and the end table from a different one. Perhaps you found a unique piece at a consignment boutique that went perfectly with the retailed pieces in your space. How fun would it be for your guests to ask you about a piece in your home and you have a story to tell? Find a story to tell in your space.
